Mongla Port was designed for berthing ships having 8.50 m draft. Upto 1980 there was not any siltation problem either in Jetty front or Channel area. But after 1980 siltation started in Jetty front Area. From that time regular maintenance dredging was performed in jetty front area. In the meantime it was seen that siltation has started in Harbour Area (About 13 Km downstream from Port Jetty). Due to this siltation, 03 times capital dredging project has implemented in the year of 1994 - 1995, 2004 - 2005 & 2013-2014. To ensure the safe movement of Coal Carrying vessels of Rampal Power Plant, the Channel between Mongla Port to Power Plant has dredged in 2017-2019. The entrance Channel of Mongla Port known as outer Bar, which has dredged in 2019-20. After outer Bar Dredging, 9.5-10 m draft ship is coming at anchorage area of Mongla Port. For regular maintenance dredging, Mongla Port Authority have 02 nos 18” dia Cutter Suction Dredger.

Ongoing Dredging: 

  • Presently dredging at Inner Bar (Mongla Port to Harbaria) is ongoing. Total 23.4 km and 23.75 Million cu.m will be dredged by 2026. After completion of this project, minimum 9.5 meter draft vessel will be able to berth at Jetty.
  • The outer Bar area also requires maintenance dredging every year.
  • Regular Maintenance dredging at Berth/ Jetty area is also ongoing through MPA's Dredger.

Planned Dredging: To maintain the channel depth minimum 7.5 m, recently GoB has approved a project for 5 year maintenance dredging. Under this Project, full channel will be continuously maintained at a depth of minimum 7.5 m CD and at Jetty front 10.5 m CD upto December 2029.
