Mongla Port was designed for berthing ships having 8.50 m draft. Upto 1980 there was not any siltation problem either in Jetty front or Channel area. But after 1980 siltation started in Jetty front Area. From that time regular maintenance dredging was performed in jetty front area. In the meantime it was seen that siltation has started in Harbour Area (About 13 Km downstream from Port Jetty). Due to this siltation, 03 times capital dredging project has implemented in the year of 1994 - 1995, 2004 - 2005 & 2013-2014. For regular maintenance dredging, Mongla Port Authority have 02 nos 18” dia Cutter Suction Dredger.

 

Currently another capital Dredging project is ongoing which is scheduled to complete at the end of 2014. After completion of this project, ships having draft of 7.50 m will be able to take berth at Mongla Port.

 

Dredging Plan:

  1. Ongoing: To ensure safe movement of coal carrying ships to 2 X 660 MW Maitree Super Thermal Power Project at Rampal, GoB has approved a project titled “Capital Dredging in Pussur Channel from Mongla Port to Rampal Power Plant”. Under this project total 3.88 million cu.m spoil will be dredged by Cutter Suction Dredger and Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger.
  2. Under Approval Process: To achieve sufficient draft of 10.5/11 meter draft vessel (Upto Anchorage Area) a project titled “Dredging at the Outer Bar Area of Pussur Channel” has prepared which is now under process of approval by GoB. In this project total 10.3 million cu.m spoil will be dredged by Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger.
